Why Self-Awareness Can Suck

This might sound strange coming from someone who is an advocate of self-awareness. However, sharing what I struggled with at times, has proved useful for clients to realise they are not alone in thinking it. I hope, therefore, it reassures you too.

So this is the thing. This is why it sucks.

It sucks because many of us are extremely critical and demanding of ourselves. Which means, on becoming fully aware of what we are doing, we go into judgment mode.

“I can’t believe I did that, how can I call myself a good person?”

“How many years have I wasted not knowing that?”

“Omg I am so stupid, why didn’t I see that before?”

And so on, and so forth.

So this is for you….

Yes, on occasion it can seem a lot to ask of yourself. However, it is important. Let it go.

One other thing…

If you know deep down that there is something missing from your life, something you keep looking for, want to achieve, or just don’t want to put up with in your life anymore, then take action. Life is short, you know this, so please live it with as few regrets as you possibly can.

There are many excellent resources out there from books, articles, people, courses, webinars, you name it. One size does not fit all, and you will find hidden gems in different places. No need to take any one book or method as gospel. Mix and match it for you.

If you do want bespoke help and guidance, find an excellent coach or mentor*.  Skilled coaching changes people’s lives, every single day. It is powerful work. It makes even difficult journeys easier and quicker.

This is what you were waiting for, it is time to take action. Explore what is actually holding you back. Explore what you want. Take a big breath and a step forward, towards feeling successful, happier, and fulfilled. It isn’t always easy, but it hurts a lot less than regrets and lost time. And, when you get that new awareness? Be thankful and let it go. Now go for it.

* Life is sometimes horrid and coaching may not be the best place for that.  A positive mindset can make a huge difference as to how we deal with life’s challenges, however, a therapist is often the best person for trauma, depression and other more serious events. Seek professional help. If you need a recommendation please get in touch.
